Sunday School
Zion Lutheran Church
Welcome to Sunday School! We are very excited to have you join us! Here is some information to assist you.

Purpose
The Sunday School of Zion Lutheran Church functions for this purpose: “To make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Sunday School Hour
Sunday School begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. and concludes promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Sunday School Registration/Waiver Form
We MUST have a signed and completed Registration/Waiver Form on file each year for every child that attends Sunday School. There are spaces to list all of your children on just one form this year. Click on the following link to print the form or it can also be found on the wall in the narthex. Please turn this into the church office or the registration table in the narthex following the 9 am worship service on August 21 or August 28. It is helpful to staff to turn these in prior to the start of Sunday School for preparation purposes but can also be turned in on the 1st day of Sunday School on September 11.

Family Involvement During the Week
Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss with their children what they learned during their Sunday school lesson. Your child will receive a Faith Buzz at Home card to take home. Please utilize this tool to revisit the Bible story and theme during the following week to draw connections between the lesson and daily life events and experiences.

First Bible Faith Stepping Stones

Children in grade 3 will be presented with a gift Bible. Children and their parents are encouraged to attend three sessions that outline the Bible prior to the presentation in church. A letter of invitation and additional information will be sent to all 3rd grade students each year. The dates of the sessions will be posted on the church calendar.

Check-in for Preschool through 2nd Grade

Children in grades Preschool through 2nd grade are required to be checked in by their parent or guardian for their safety and to ensure we have an accurate list of the kids in each class. A sign-in kiosk will be located outside the 2nd grade classroom downstairs. After your child is checked in, they will get a wristband placed on them with their assigned class color so that teachers and assistants will know that they have been checked in. This age group will also need to be checked out by the parent or guardian at 10:15 in the child’s classroom.

Check-in for 3rd through 8th grade
This year we have a change where 3rd graders through 8th graders will need to check themselves in once they get to their classroom so that we have an accurate attendance count and safety purposes.

Music Time During the Sunday School Hour
Preschool through grade 4 meet in the 2nd grade classroom for music time at 9:15 am and then disperse with their teacher to their respective classrooms at 9:30 am. All other children in grades 5 through 8 should go to their assigned classroom at 9:15 am.

Zion Lutheran Church Sunday School is divided into the following age groups and each class is assigned a class color:

Preschool – Blue class
Age Group – 3 and 4 year olds

Note for age 3 through 5 year olds:

Grade 2 – Orange class
Classroom – downstairs
Grades 3 and 4 – Red class

Senior High Youth and Adults
We are always in need of people that would be willing to assist in a classroom. Even if you can’t assist every week, we still would welcome your help and it’s a lot of fun!
Curriculum
For the fourth year in a row, we are utilizing the “Buzz” Sunday School curriculum for Preschool through 8th grade. The following outlines what the kids will experience each Sunday:

How Buzz Works in the Classroom

Buzz Bond:
Relationship building time between teacher and students

God Sightings:
Kids learn how to see God in daily life.

Bible Buzz:
Teaching the Bible lesson with help of experience-learning ‘gizmos’.

Buzz in Action:
Life-application of the lesson.

Let’s Pray:
Teach kids how to pray with Buzz prayer starters.

Faith Buzz at Home:

Helps families keep the conversation going at home all week.

Singing in Church

The younger Sunday School children, grades Preschool through 4th grade, will have the opportunity during the year to sing twice in worship. This is a very meaningful experience not only for the children, but for the entire congregation as well. The children will sing at the Christmas program in December and also on Palm Sunday.

Birthdays

Have your child (PS through Grade 4) bring in pennies their birthday week for their age and we will celebrate by adding them to the lamb bank during music time. These pennies will be donated to Feed My Starving Children. They will also get a special gift in their classroom.

Faithfulness Gifts and Visitors

Each time a child has attended 5 Sundays, they will be given a gift for their faithful attendance. Also, if your child brings a visitor, the visitor and your child will both receive a gift.

Sunday School Offerings

We will support Feed My Starving Children this year. 100% of the children’s offerings and birthday pennies will go to this charity. The offering basket will be passed around during the music time for age groups Preschool through 4th grade and in the classroom for 5th through 8th grades. Watch the church bulletin to see how many meals the donations provide each week. To learn more, visit their website at http://www.fmsc.org/.
